It can also be helpful to know some of the things you can do to enhance your back health.

Sit less and invest in ergonomics: Sitting for long periods can cause unnecessary pain in your body, including your back. When you sit “the discs in your lower spine are loaded 3 times more.” Many of us have a bad habit of leaning towards our computer screen or slouching in our seat, which can cause more strain on the joints. If your job requires you to be at a desk, consider taking breaks from sitting, and ensure your desk follows an ergonomic setup: the right chair, the correct distance from your monitor, etc.

Choose the right shoes. Your shoes can make a difference in how you feel. Choosing the right ones can help your spine stay aligned. Some of your better options will include running shoes, specially designed insoles, and prescription orthotics,

Visit your chiropractor. Getting regular adjustments may help reduce pain, improve mobility, and keep everything correctly aligned. Plus, chiropractors can help educate you on the benefits of maintaining your musculoskeletal health.

Get massages. Massages can help with increasing blood flow and releasing endorphins. Getting a massage can also be a good way to get rid of painful trigger points.

Drink water. It’s important for your body to stay hydrated. The “intervertebral discs consist largely of water—at birth, discs are about 80% percent water.” The water content does decrease over time as you age, but being hydrated can help your discs stay healthy.

Strengthen your core muscles. Keeping your core muscles strong can assist with back support. Because daily activities don’t usually push you to strengthen your core, it’s important to set aside time for core exercises.
