When you get a good night’s sleep you can start your day off feeling refreshed. However, a bad night’s rest cannot only aggravate neck and back pain, but also cause you to feel groggy. One of the first steps in selecting the right pillow is to consider your sleep position.

If you’re a side sleeper, you’ll want a pillow that runs medium to firm. You’ll want something that fills that gap between your shoulders and your head as well. It should keep your neck aligned while you’re asleep.

If you’re a back sleeper, you’ll want something a little thinner, because there is less space to fill to keep your neck aligned. Make sure your head doesn’t tilt forward. You’ll also want a pillow that is soft to medium.

If your a stomach sleeper, you may choose to go without a pillow under your head, but if you do choose one, pick an option that is thin. Also, a pillow under your stomach is recommended to avoid back pain from the pressure of sleeping on your stomach.

Keep in mind, if you have a harder mattress you may not sink as much into the mattress, whereas if you have a softer mattress you make sink further in. This can make a difference in the size pillow you need.

Pillows come in various types. They can be filled with feathers and down, memory foam, water, latex, or wool/cotton. So there are plenty of options to choose from. A water pillow can allow you to adjust the size to fit your needs. You can fill it up or remove water as needed. You may find some other pillow options that allow this as well, for example, you may be able to remove filling from the pillow to custom fit your needs. Some options like memory foam can mold and shape to your body.

There are a lot of considerations to take into account when choosing the right filling and size for your pillow. It’s a good idea to talk with a chiropractor when deciding which pillow to choose to best fit your needs. If there’s an option to do so, test the pillow by leaning it against a wall when you’re at the store and then “laying” against the wall, like you would on your bed. Keep in mind, your mattress softness or firmness should be taken into consideration, as this can change your pillow needs.
