Neck pain can not only be distracting, but it can also travel, causing you additional pain elsewhere. When you suffer from neck pain, you may find yourself relying on pain pills just to get through the day. However, there is another option…
Chiropractors can examine you to find the cause of your neck pain, which can lead you to a treatment plan. When you see a chiropractor for your neck (cervical spine), they will check your range of movement, take notice of your posture, and even see what movement causes you pain. They will ask you questions to gauge the problem, e.g. when the pain started, how you’ve treated it, and if the pain travels to other areas of the body. They may also ask you if you’ve noticed anything that makes the pain better or worse.
Chiropractors can order tests to diagnose the cause. An x-ray can show fractures, bone spurs, arthritis, and the space between the discs. A CT/CAT scan or MRI can show if there are herniations or bulging discs. An EMG can show if there is nerve damage. If any of these tests are needed, the chiropractor will suggest the one (or ones) that they feel are necessary based on what they think may be causing the issue. The cervical spine offers flexibility, allowing your head to move forward, backward, and side to side. Accidents, falls, poor posture, repetitive movements, and aging can all put your neck at risk.
The good news is, neck adjustments can help with improving your range of motion and even reducing pain. Once the chiropractor knows the cause of your pain, they can help you find the best treatment option. If you require surgery, they will point you to a medical practitioner or specialist, otherwise a chiropractor can put you on a maintenance plan in order to reduce pain and give you better neck mobility.
